‘Return of Champions’ to Light up Awka on Boxing Day

As Nigerians clamor for the revival of boxing in the Country, Anambra Governor, Dr. Willie Obiano has accepted to host the first world boxing title fight in Nigeria in recent years.

The boxing extravanga will be the biggest boxing event in the Country in recent years and will hold at the Dr Alex Ekwueme square in Awka, the Anambra State Capital on Boxing day, December 26, 2014.

The six bouts promotion will see some top Nigerian professional boxers based abroad returning home to showcase their talents to Nigerians.

The event promoted by Emmaco Sports Limited and  tagged ‘Return of Champions’ will see current WBO international Light middle weight champion, King Davidson Emenogu fighting for the WBF interim middle weight world title.

Current WABU light heavyweight champion, Jude Illo will vie for the WBF int'l light heavyweight title.

Current WBF welter weight champion, Gifted Cole will be going for the vacant WBA PAN Africa middle weight title.

The night will also see current Common Wealth super Middle weight champion, Isaac Ekpo defending his title.

All the listed fighters have all signed on for the promotion. Their Foreign opponents will be announced next week during a press conference in Awka.

Top former Nigeria born World boxing Champions, Herbie Okechukwu Hide, a two time WBO world heavy weight champion as well as former WBO Champion, Henry Akinwande and Reggie Johnson will all be present as ring side guests during the ‘Return of Champions’.

There will also be lots of side attractions by some top Nigeria musical acts and Nollywood Stars during the event.

Governor Obiano recently put his signature on the World’s biggest boxing gloves which is going round the Country to promote the big boxing event.

The Governor said he is using the opportunity thrown up by the sporting event to invite the world to Anambra state.

The governor also said he wants to make sure boxing as a sport in Nigeria regains its lost glory like in the days of Dick tiger, Hogan Bassey, Jerry Okorodudu, Obisa Nwankpa and Ngozika Ekwelum amongst others.
