Obafemi Martins wins MLS Goal of the Year

As soon as Obafemi Martins scored against the San Jose Earthquakes, it was hailed as a likely Goal of the Year candidate. Turns out, those projections were right. Martins' stunning half-volley easily won the fan-voting contest, raking in nearly 59 percent of the vote in the final four-goal group.

While it could be argued that the buildup to Will Johnson's goal was more impressive or that the goals from Thierry Henry and Lee Nguyen were great in their own rights, Martins' goal stands out partially for the audacity required to even try it. Not only does he hit a bouncing ball from a ridiculously tight angle, but he manages to chip it perfectly over Jon Busch's head. Busch's reaction to the goal pretty much says it all.
